While understanding God’s Word is essential to the Christian life, memorizing the actual words is equally profitable. The two go together and should not be separated. The words of God will stand forever, our understanding is, however, constantly growing and deepening. Why leave God’s Word in His book? Left there only for reference from time to time? When we memorize His Word we unbind them from their dusty page and place them in our minds and hearts where they will become part of our vocabulary, mingle with our other words and thoughts, and produce God pleasing fruits in word and deed.
By memorizing we can now take His Word into the classroom, the work place, the family, the hospital, the argument, the loneliness, the celebration and the gravesite. Memorizing is a way that God’s words become our words. Books are a blessing from God, but not a replacement for memorization.
